Applications of Liquid-Ring Vacuum Pumps: Because of that, they have gained a reputation as very reliable and efficient vacuums. Although their principle is ingeniously simple, the concept upon which they function is compressing gas by means of an eccentric rotating liquid ring to generate a vacuum.

The Operation of a Liquid Ring Vacuum Pump

The arrangement of the liquid ring vacuum pump impeller is an eccentric one which has vanes and is housed in a cylindrical chamber that is filled half full with a sealing liquid—water or liquid best for the application. By the centrifugal forces acting on the sealing liquid while it turns with the impeller, it creates a revolving liquid ring as it turns. This liquid ring from between the impeller's vanes usually forms sealed compartments.

These chambers expand and contract owing to the eccentric positioning of the impeller during its rotation. While passing the inlet port, a chamber expands and creates a vacuum that draws gas or vapor into the chamber. Continuous rotation by the impeller causes the chamber to contract and compress the gas. The compressed gas is expelled from the pump upon reaching the discharge port. This is a continuous process that effectively evacuates gas from the system and maintains the desired vacuum level.

Key Components and Their Functions

  • Impeller: This is the rotor with fixed vanes, which allows the conveyance and compression of gas in the pump.
  • Casing: The casing is designed to enclose the impeller along with a sealing liquid and also to provide a supporting surface for the liquid ring creation.
  • Sealing Liquid: This is typically water, which creates the liquid ring to seal and compress the gas. The sealing liquid can also be chosen according to specific process needs.
  • Inlet and Discharge Ports: Designed as apertures, facilitate the entry and exit of gas during the pump's operation.
