Why Dry Vacuum Pumps?

In the current times, when we are debating, discussing about increasing the productivity of our Manufacturing facilities and at the same time decreasing our emissions, Dry Vacuum Pumps are the answer since it limits the environmental foot print and at the same time helps company increase their productivity with better quality and faster Vacuum.

What is a Dry Vacuum Pump?

The functional area inside the pump (pumping chamber) is dry/oil free and does not use any fluids to create vacuum. This eliminates the risk of process gas contamination and the generation of effluent. Dry pumps also usually offer clear savings in maintenance and running costs compared to wet vacuum pump technologies. Also recovery of uncondensed vapour(carry over vapour) of the solvent is possible at the discharge of the pump.

Applications of Dry Vacuum Pump:

Dry vacuum is used to pump some of the most aggressive and problematic gases in a broad range of processes, including but not limited to drying , solvent recovery, distillation, evaporation, crystallization, deodorization and filtration

Dry Vacuum Pump Technologies in the Market:

  • Horizontal Dry Screw Vacuum Pump

  • Vertical Reverse Claw/Claw+Lobe Vacuum Pump

Horizontal Dry Screw Vacuum Pump:

Dry screw vacuum pumps contain two screw rotors which rotate inside a cylinder. Thereby, the gas is trapped between cylinder and screw chambers and carried to the gas discharge.

Very close clearances are maintained between the screws for generating the Vacuum. However, if the material is sticky the screw tips can rub against the bore surface and generate heat which can eventually cause seizure.

This technology is little less tolerant to changes in temperature; on heating the rotors expand faster than the casing causing seizure. Also in case of damage to one of the screws, the whole pair needs to be replaced.

The rotors (screws) come with Coating of material like PEEK and PFA. In case of any condensation inside the pump, entry of particulates or seizure due to overheating, the coating can be damaged. The recoating of screws is a very costly affair and hence extreme care is required while handling this equipment. Recoating cannot be done on-site and the equipment needs to be sent to the vendor which can entail a downtime of about a month. Generally this technology can be deployed for low boilers with properly defined process parameters. For high boilers and variable process parameters, the maintenance cost can be quite high for this type of pumps.

 

Vertical Reverse Claw/Claw+Lobe Vacuum Pump

With claw vacuum pumps, two claw-shaped rotors turn in the opposite direction inside the housing. The claw rotors are designed to suck in the air or gas which is then compressed and discharged. Additional root stage helps in giving better vacuum.

Vertical design is inherently free draining; hence lower chances of condensation inside the pump, thus avoiding corrosion as compared to horizontal design which is more prone to Condensation and corrosion.

This design can handle the sticky material and can withstand the variations in inlet gas temperature in a better way without damaging the internals of the pump. The rotors (claws and lobe) are without coating. Hence this technology is more flexible and allows certain variations in the process parameters without worrying about the damage to the coating of the rotors. This helps in avoiding the high maintenance costs and downtime associated with recoating the rotors in screw technology.

It has Modular design (four Stages), hence low cost of spares as only modules can be serviced or replaced. In case of damage to any one rotor, only that particular rotor can be replaced without replacing the whole pair. Claw dry vacuum pumps can be completely serviced on-site and sending it to vendor’s location is not required.

Claw Vacuum Pumps are suitable for High boilers as well as low boilers. However for fluids with PH value less than 2, these pumps are not suitable

 

Conclusion:

Dry vacuum pumps offer major benefits over traditional wet pumping technologies for pharmaceutical and chemical processing, largely because it has none of the problems associated with the oil or water in wet pumps. Dry pumps are clean, reliable, provide low to high vacuum and require minimal maintenance. Importantly, they can be used quite safely even when pumping flammable and corrosive vapours.
